MVFC Responds To Serious Motor Vehicle Collision With Entrapment - Barclay Rd / Woodyard Rd
Saturday, July 28, 2012

Saturday evening July 28, 2012 at 6:54 pm EST the Marydel Vol. Fire Co. of Marydel Delaware was dispatched as first due for a motor vehicle accident with subjects reported trapped at Barclay Rd & Woodyard Dr. on the Maryland side of their first due. Marydel Pumper/Rescue 56-3 quickly made the response with a crew of 8 under the command of Capt Jason Mills, followed closely by Marydel Engine 56-1 with a crew of 8 under the command of Capt. Gary Bolden. Units arrived to find a two vehicle accident, head on, with 3 subjects trapped (2 in the dark colored vehicle and 1 in the red car). Capt. Mills established Command. Command immediately requested an additional Rescue Co., while EMS units on scene requested additional ALS & BLS units along with an additional aviation unit. Crews from P/R56-3 went to work on the vehicle with 2 subjects trapped, while the crew from Engine 56-1 went to work on the vehicle with the one subject trapped. Using the Holmatro Combination Tool the crew from Engine 56-1 began removing the driver’s door to gain access. Once the door was removed EMS crews where able to gain access to the seriously injured driver. Making a quick extrication this driver was able to be packaged and transported as a priority #1 to Kent General Hospital in Dover De. in serious condition. During the same time the crew from P/R 56-3 was working on the occupants of the other vehicle which had 2 subjects trapped in the front seats. Using the Holmatro Spreader crews removed the driver’s door so EMS could gain access to the patients. While access to the patients was being made crews were also using the Holmatro O-Cutters to remove the roof for better access for patient care and to facilitate a dash roll. Finally using the Holmatro Small & Large Ram the crews were able complete a dash roll freeing both front seat passengers. One passengers of this vehicle were packaged and transported as a priority #1 patient to Kent General Hospital in Dover Del. with serious injuries. The second occupant with multiple fractures (11 compound) was transported priority #1 by MSP Aviation to Maryland Shock Trauma in Baltimore. Total extrication time of all patients was completed approximately 20 minutes. Because of the excellent performance of the Holmatro extrication equipment and the training of the crews on scene all three patients where given the best chance for survival. Units On Scene: 56-1, 56-3, 51-6 QA PM 600, PM 17, PM 14, BLS 492, C-51 B-56, MSP Trooper 1, 56-15, 56 & 51 Fire police, Maryland State Police, MDOT
